“Norma Gale” Video Premiere!
Today I’m so pleased to be able to share a new music video with you for “Norma Gale“, a special song from my latest release, New Mistakes. The video premiered today via The Boot, a Nashville website focused on the songwriting and country music scenes, as part of their feature ‘Story Behind the Song‘.
I was inspired to write this song after meeting a living legend from the 1970s country scene, a Canadian woman named Norma Gale who was a near-famous country star. She played all over the world, but specifically had a great following in Nashville, where she played with Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty. I was lucky enough to not only meet her but also to spend hours talking with her, and her stories — her struggles, her victories and her bone-deep determination — didn’t just inspire this song, they inspired me.
I was playing a show in New Brunswick and Norma’s son Marc had come out with his wife. After the show I met him and we got chatting, and I found out his mom was a pretty famous musician in the ’70s. He told me she was in the hospital and asked if I’d like to meet her the next day. I agreed, and the song is based on the stories she told me on the day I met with her, as well as some background from her son, who I’ve become friends with over the last couple of years. I wrote this song to tell Norma’s story, to share her successes and her hardships, and most of all to chronicle the unique relationship between Norma and her son Marc, who she raised all on her own while touring across the world as a single mom. I kept in touch with Norma and her son, and reached out when I finally made it to Nashville myself to do some songwriting, but unfortunately she had passed away two weeks earlier.
The video, directed by Mitch Barnes, follows Norma’s life path and features many personal snapshots from her life that Marc was kind enough to share. Norma always had really strong connections to Nashville, so I’m incredibly pleased that the video is making its premiere in Music City. You can watch “Norma Gale” here, streaming on The Boot.
